It had been a little over a year since our mother passed away, and the reality set in that the house that my brother, sister and I grew up in needed to be sold. My parent first and only house that they bought in 1957. They built our family in this house. We started to go through the house and empty things out room by room. It was hard for all of us, all the memories, everything we picked up or looked at had reminders of all the good times and some not so good, that we shared as a family, and as we grew older our extended families had shared this place, this place we all called our home. The neighborhood that was established back in late fifties early sixties was a close-knit group. There were somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty children all within five to seven years of one another in age that lived on the block. We all played together and the street lights were the indicator that you had better get home. We even formed a soft ball team the Eastgate Bombers. Newsday once did an article on us. I write these memories to try an portray the emotions that we are going though at this time in our lives. Our life long neighbor across the street had recently passed away, an all too familiar story in the recent decade. There are very few originals left. They put their house up for sale just as we were having a garage/estate sale. They were getting a lot of interest on their house. They priced it relatively low for the area and the market. We put a for sale sign up on our house, and in the next couple of days many people & realtors showed interest in the house. Their house sold in less than a week in a bidding war. My brother who lives in Florida came up to help clean out the house, our sister & I made a decided to try and sell the house ourselves on For Sale by Owner. This was a no brainer. The market was hot, it was the perfect time of year, our neighbor’s house just sold in a week, inventory was low and buyers were going to bid wars to buy. I signed up for FOR SALE BY OWNER, took pictures, did a write up on the house, filled out the listing form, we were very excited. I received the lawn signs, printed the house information sheets, scheduled open houses, we were ready to go. We figured a couple of weeks a month and we would have the house sold. We were checking the web sites Trulia, Zillow, FSBO the view counter was going crazy. No calls? No traffic at the open house? What we did get was call after call after call from real estate agents. I started to meet some of the less arrogant obnoxious ones. They would say they have clients interested in the house and wanted to preview it first before they bring their clients by. When we would meet at the house it was pretty much always the same. Once they got in it was the sales pitch. I can do this, I can do that, you don’t know what you’re doing, sign with me and…… When we decided to go with FSBO we said we would try for two months and if we weren’t able to sell it by then we would consider a realtor. The agents that my sister and I were meeting with were being interviewed to some degree. Kelly Cafiso was one of the hand full of agents out of the army of agents that was able to get through my phone screening for an appointment. Unlike most agents that were calling everyday Kelly was pleasant on our initial call, she professionally inquired about the house and how it was going with selling it. She asked if she could check back in a couple of weeks, I said that would be fine. When she called back, she again spoke professionally and asked if she could come by to see the house. I reluctantly said yes. I was coming from thirty some miles away I work in the city, and had to drive to a different train station in the morning in order to meet at the house. Each time I meet with someone about the house it was an inconvenience. At this point I had made up my mind that I wasn’t going to meet any more agents. Kelly was different somehow, so I agreed to meet with her. The day we met at the house she was early, she was professionally dressed, and presented herself in a friendly caring professional manor. The thing that made her stand out over the other agents was that she actually listened to what I was saying. She understood the emotion of having to sell this house. She understood this wasn’t just a property to us it was our home, our mother and father’s home that they worked their whole life for. The reason we were trying to sell it ourselves was to provide a better opportunity to someone looking for a home. We wanted to save the real estate commission to provide a better opportunity for a buyer. We could sell it for a lower price, still get the profit we felt was just for our parent’s lifelong investment, and offer a great opportunity for some young couple starting out. Kelly was visually moved when I explained our thought process. Kelly grew up in the area so she was very familiar with the schools, shopping, commuting opportunities in the area this along with her impressive resume in real estate made this a good fit. Kelly is a true professional. I asked her if she knew one particular real estate agent and what her opinion of them was. I point blank asked her. This was when I made up my mind, that if we do end up using an agent Kelly would be the one. Her answer was that she knew of the agent. Again I asked what her opinion was. She thought for a few seconds and said she had gone up against the agent a few times. Again I said and your opinion is?? As I recall she said that the agent was slick. I had my opinion already con artist was what I thought. Kelly being the consummate professional she is would not discredit this agent that works in her field. She got her opinion across without lowering her values. A few weeks later after another open house with no action we made the decision to list with a realtor. Kelly was at the top of my list. My sister was the executor of the estate so it was one more interview for Kelly. My sister came away with the same impression. We signed that night came up with an asking price. The next day the neighbor’s house that had previously sold went back on the market, their deal fell through. They put it back up at their original price. This is literally the same house across the street with some newer updates then our house had, and it was priced 26k less. This didn’t discourage Kelly she got right to work getting the house out there to all the agencies with in a couple of days the house was being shown. Within a couple of weeks we had an offer. It was lower than we were willing to accept. Kelly suggested to lower our price because of the other house. We agreed and immediately got several offers that went to a bidding war. Kelly was right on top of it calling, emailing, texting, at all hours any time any day it didn’t matter she was there working for us to sell the house, and that is exactly what she did. We signed with Kelly toward the end of June and closed August 11th. Kelly crosses all the T’s, and dots all the I’s she was understanding, respectful, caring, diligent, responsive, I highly recommend her she was excellent a pleasure to work with. Alan Broda
